A husband-and-wife woodworking team has launched a new business at Silverdale Enterprise Centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme after moving into a workshop unit last November.
Jo and Simon Curl have established Shabby Chic Shop, which creates bespoke handmade gifts and homeware from recycled furniture.
Why Silverdale?
The couple viewed six other enterprise centres before choosing Silverdale, finding them too expensive. After a recommendation from another business owner, they were guided through the process by the centre's team.
Jo Curl said the affordable workspace and support available had been crucial to getting started. "Not only is it cost-effective, it's a really good space to work in, and there's so much information for start-up businesses that you would never think of," she said.
Background
Simon completed an apprenticeship in cabinet making and ran a successful woodworking business during 17 years living in Australia. Both Jo and Simon hope to return to Australia in the future.
Silverdale Enterprise Centre is one of eight enterprise centres run by Staffordshire County Council. The centres offer flexible and affordable workspace with rolling monthly fees and no long-term contracts.
Next steps
Jo and Simon plan to build a website and expand their online presence. Their ambition is to have their furniture and giftware in homes across the region.
