The final phase of refurbishment work on a cherished 18th century bridge has begun in South Staffordshire. Wodehouse Lane Bridge, located near Wombourne, started its second and final phase of work on Monday. The seven-week project will be completed next month and includes strengthening work, waterproofing, drainage improvements and resurfacing to protect the Grade II Listed structure.

Drivers in the Stafford area should be aware that Wodehouse Lane will be completely closed for the duration of the scheme. Signed diversions are in place to help traffic find alternative routes. Council bosses say the full closure is necessary to complete the work as quickly as possible and minimise disruption to the local area.

Daniel Cecil, Staffordshire County Council's Cabinet Support Member for Highways, stressed the importance of the project. He said the refurbishment needed to be carried out in keeping with the bridge's Grade II Listed status. The work represents a significant investment in preserving one of Stafford's historical assets for future generations.

The refurbishment of Wodehouse Lane Bridge highlights a wider issue facing Staffordshire. The county has many ageing structures that require proper funding to remain standing safely. Staffordshire County Council is pushing the Government for better funding to save these heritage assets across the region.
