Staffordshire Libraries has launched a new website and campaign designed to encourage more young people to visit and use their local library. The site features five colourful cartoon characters created by children and young people aged 9 to 17.
The Characters
More than 300 entries were submitted by children through schools, libraries and online channels. The winning characters are:
Reggie the Monster, who loves funny books; Matilda, who is curious and passionate about facts; McKenzie, a young volunteer who discovers the characters in the library; Sparkle the Mouse, who enjoys magical stories; and Rami the Owl, who is wise and eager to share knowledge.
What the Website Offers
The new Kids Zone provides a colourful and engaging digital space for younger readers. It includes links to fun activities, information on events, details on the Reading Well for Children initiative, and other resources.
Rolling Out Across Staffordshire
Life-sized cardboard cutouts of the characters will tour libraries across Staffordshire. Smaller cutouts will be displayed in the children's area of every county council library.
Hayley Coles, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council, said the timing is particularly good as the Summer Reading Challenge is currently underway.
