Staffordshire County Council has backed a motion setting out five key equality principles at a meeting of Full Council on Thursday.
County Council Leader Martin Murray put forward the motion, which was seconded by Deputy Leader Hayley Coles.
What the motion says
The motion states that the Council believes equality should be understood as equal legal status and equal civic standing before the law.
Martin Murray said: "We believe everyone should be treated equally, fairly and on merit under the law as written and required by Parliament, not by the standards of interpretations that go far beyond what the law requires."
Hayley Coles added: "This motion is about fairness, equality and respect. It sets out clear principles that promote transparency, consistency and public trust."
What happens next
The motion is a statement of principles rather than a formal resolution to adopt them. A working group of County Council officers has been established to review an accompanying position paper titled "Equality Before the Council", which sets out the Reform UK Group's approach to equality policy.
The review will progress through formal governance processes before being presented to cabinet for consideration.
