Staffordshire County Council, working with district councils in Moorlands and South Staffordshire, has distributed pre-set-up devices to vulnerable residents at risk of digital exclusion. The six-month pilot has been hailed a success by local authorities.
The smart speakers require no technical expertise to use. Residents simply speak commands to access news, set medication reminders, make video calls, and connect to local services and events. One resident with arthritis praised the technology, noting there are no keys to press or screens to touch – making it accessible for people with mobility challenges.
Families across Stafford have reported significant peace of mind since the rollout began. Knowing their loved ones can stay connected and access support has reduced worries about vulnerable relatives living in rural areas. Staffordshire County Council will conduct a full evaluation when the 12-month pilot concludes. If successful, the authority hopes to expand the scheme across other areas of the county.
