Staffordshire County Council has acknowledged that its planning communication about school provision was unclear, following widespread disappointment among parents in the Stafford area. Dozens of families missed out on places at Dunstall Park Primary School in Tamworth, which opened as part of the 800-home Dunstall Park housing development. The newly-built school has 210 places and is now completely full.

The council insists that every child has been offered a place at a school in Tamworth, though not necessarily at their preferred school. Janet Higgins, Staffordshire County Council's education chief, admitted the planning message "should have been clearer" and acknowledged the disappointment felt by parents across the Stafford region affected by the shortage.

The original 2016 agreement between Stafford Council and developers only committed to a one-form entry school with 210 places. However, planning documents for the site mentioned it could eventually expand to 1.5 form entry, which would provide significantly more capacity. No funding is currently available for this expansion, meaning no additional places are expected in the near future.

The situation has left families in the Stafford and Tamworth area scrambling to secure alternative school places as the new academic year approaches. Parents had expected the purpose-built primary school to accommodate demand from the 800-home development, but capacity has proven insufficient. The council's admission that communication should have been clearer offers little comfort to those affected by the shortage.
