The government has confirmed that Stafford Borough Council will be replaced by a new unitary council structure covering Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.
The announcement was made on Thursday 16 July, following five proposals submitted by councils in November and a public consultation earlier this year.
Two new unitary councils will eventually replace ten existing county, city, district and borough councils across the region, including Stafford Borough Council.
Timeline and Elections
Under the government's timetable, elections to shadow councils will be held in May 2027. The new councils are expected to be formally established in April 2028.
No Immediate Service Changes
There will be no immediate changes to council services. Day-to-day provision — including household waste collection, street cleaning, parks and highways maintenance, children's services and adult social care — will continue as normal during the transition.
Council Leadership Response
Councillor Aidan Godfrey, Leader of Stafford Borough Council, said: "I am pleased with the government's decision and our key focus is on making this work for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. We already have strong and well-established partnerships, and all councils are united in our commitment to a smooth transition with no disruption to the services residents rely on."
Councils will work together to develop detailed plans for how services will move to the new councils and how council decisions will be made.
