Work to improve walking and cycling facilities near The Friary School in Lichfield will begin on Monday 20 July, Staffordshire County Council has announced.
The £400,000 scheme focuses on Eastern Avenue and will be delivered in two phases, expected to take around six weeks to complete. The improvements are designed to make it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly students, families and staff using the school.
What the work includes
The project will see construction of a new shared-use cycleway and footways along the north side of Eastern Avenue near The Friary School.
The existing puffin crossing adjacent to the school entrance will be upgraded to a toucan crossing, which allows both pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely.
An existing footpath linking Eastern Avenue and Grange Lane will also be improved for use as a shared footway and cycleway.
Traffic and access during works
Temporary traffic lights will operate on Eastern Avenue during the construction period. Footway closures will be required at certain times, with signed alternative routes provided for pedestrians.
Residents and businesses along the route have been contacted directly about the scheme.
Funding and next steps
The project is funded by HS2 as part of wider investment to encourage active travel and improve connectivity in communities along the railway route.
