Demolition has begun on the former Wilko store on Stafford's High Street as part of the council's plans to regenerate the town centre. Stafford Borough Council purchased the building, and the site is now earmarked for a potential expansion of the local college.
The demolition was approved by the council's planning committee on Wednesday 8 July. The project is being funded by central government and is expected to take around 12 weeks to complete.
Parking and facilities to remain open
The council has confirmed that more than 70 car parking spaces, including disabled bays, will remain available in the area. Public toilets will continue to operate during and after the work.
Wider town centre plans
This demolition is part of a wider transformation plan for Stafford town centre. The council's development framework includes a new market hall offering food, drink and entertainment, as well as new retail, commercial and residential opportunities.
