Work to install a new footbridge on Burston Public Footpath 36 is progressing on schedule, with completion expected in August, Staffordshire County Council has announced.
The bridge is being built to replace the previous structure, which was damaged by a fallen tree. Crews have now excavated the site and built foundations for the new bridge. These foundations are curing and need dry conditions to set properly.
Next stage of work
From Monday 27 July, crews will create a temporary access road to allow heavy equipment onto the site safely. Engineers will then transport the bridge components and begin assembling the new structure.
Hayley Coles, Staffordshire County Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said the new bridge will be stronger and more accessible than the previous one.
"This new bridge won't be the same as the last one. We're creating a stronger, more accessible crossing that will serve users of the route for many years to come, making it easier for everyone to enjoy this popular walk," she said.
Safety reminder
Footpath 36 between the River Trent and Burston Lane remains closed during construction to protect public safety. The council has had to add extra security measures after members of the public attempted to enter the works site.
Coles urged people to keep away from barriers and the closed section of the footpath. "While I appreciate that people want to see how the new bridge is progressing along, please remember that this is a construction site and very dangerous," she said.
