Staffordshire County Council has confirmed blue-green algae in water at Chasewater and Cannock Chase Country Park. Visitors are being urged to keep out of the water and away from affected areas.
What is blue-green algae?
Blue-green algae is a type of bacteria that can produce toxic chemicals harmful to people and animals. It appears as green or turquoise wispy paint or scum on the water's surface. It naturally occurs in lakes, ponds, and rivers, typically during the summer months, and can take several weeks to clear.
Health and safety advice
The county council is warning all visitors to stay out of the water and keep children away from affected areas. Temperatures that remain warm can extend the time the algae persists.
Pet owners must keep dogs on leads and not allow them to swim or drink from the water. Blue-green algae can be fatal to animals.
Warning signs have been placed at both country parks to alert visitors.
What to do if exposed
Anyone who becomes unwell after contact with water suspected of containing blue-green algae should seek immediate medical advice. Pet owners should seek veterinary advice straight away if their dog shows signs of illness after potential exposure.
