Staffordshire is hosting Armed Forces Day celebrations this Saturday with events across the county honouring those who serve. The National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas is running a special remembrance service and family activities over two days, while Staffordshire County Council will raise the armed forces flag at Shire Hall in Stafford as a public show of support.
The council is encouraging residents to take part in the #saluteourforces campaign by sharing photos of themselves saluting in tribute to serving personnel, veterans, reservists and their families. Martin Murray, Leader at Staffordshire County Council, said Armed Forces Day recognises "the courage, commitment and sacrifice of the men and women who serve our country, past and present."
Gordon Munro, Vice-chairman and a former armed forces member, emphasised the deeper meaning of the occasion. "This day is about more than ceremony," he said. "It is about gratitude." Staffordshire County Council holds a Gold Defence Employer Recognition Award and is calling on local businesses and organisations to show their support for armed forces personnel.
The council is asking local businesses and organisations in Stafford and across the county to sign the Armed Forces Covenant. This pledge demonstrates ongoing commitment to supporting those who serve and have served. Communities throughout Staffordshire are encouraged to get involved in the weekend celebrations and show their appreciation for the armed forces.
