Repair crews have started work this week on a collapsed dry-stone retaining wall on the A520 Cheadle Road in Wetley Rocks, near Stafford. Staffordshire County Council highways teams are tackling a major rebuild expected to take up to six weeks. Barriers and two-way traffic lights are already in place near the Powys Arms Pub and will remain throughout the repairs.
The wall collapse, which occurred last month, requires more than a simple rebuild. Engineers will reconstruct the wall and reinforce it with a concrete backing to handle the weight and traffic levels. Much of the work will happen below road level, meaning drivers may not see all the activity taking place on the A520.
Patrick Allen, Staffordshire County Council's Cabinet Support Member for Highways North, confirmed crews will work as quickly as possible to restore normal traffic flow. He has urged drivers to take extra care when passing through the repair area near Stafford.
Motorists using the A520 should expect delays during the six-week repair period. The two-way traffic lights will manage traffic flow, but journeys may take longer than usual. Stafford residents and commuters are advised to plan extra time when travelling through Wetley Rocks.
