Staffordshire County Council is inviting electric vehicle owners and potential owners to share their views on home charging solutions for residents without off-street parking. A survey launched by the council is open until Sunday 9 August.
The council is exploring a cross-pavement solution, also known as an EV gully — a small channel installed in the pavement that allows a charging cable to run safely between a home charge point and a vehicle parked on the street, without creating a trip hazard.
How costs could be reduced
The scheme would significantly reduce costs for residents by enabling home rather than public charging. Some costs may be covered through the Staffordshire County Council's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, which was secured from the Government to improve charging options for households without off-street parking.
What the survey will reveal
By completing the survey, residents will help the council's transport team understand where there is demand, how people travel now and will do in the future, and how much people may be willing or able to contribute towards the cost. This information will shape future decisions and help plan a fair and effective scheme for Staffordshire.
Andrew Mynors, Staffordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Connectivity, said: "While there is growing electric vehicle ownership nationally, we understand that many residents do not have off-street parking. The solution being proposed could deliver affordable charging options, utilising funding already secured by the county council and at no extra cost to us."
Mynors added: "We're urging people to complete our survey – which is now open until 9 August – so that we can get this right for residents. We have reviewed how we can help provide charging infrastructure in a way that benefits the people who need it most whilst keeping disruption to communities at a minimum during installation."
