Stafford Borough Council is asking residents and businesses for their views on a proposed ban on face coverings designed to help police tackle anti-social behaviour and crime.
How the ban would work
Under the proposal, people suspected of causing trouble or criminal activity could be asked to remove their face coverings. Those who refuse would face a £100 fixed penalty. The council has emphasised that people wearing face coverings who are not involved in anti-social behaviour will not be affected.
Anna Nevin, Head of Wellbeing at the council, said the proposal followed feedback from local police and stressed that any enforcement would use common sense.
Why the council is considering the ban
The face covering provision would be added to the council's Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), which already addresses issues like street drinking, roof climbing, and dog fouling.
Senior councillors heard that residents have reported feeling alarmed or intimidated by people wearing face coverings. The council also noted that coverings can hamper CCTV operators and witnesses trying to identify those involved in crime.
